- Viswanathan Anand beat Teimour Radjabov in the annual rapid world championship match 5.0 - 3.0

- Peter Svidler played against Levon Aronian in chess960 - Random Rapid Chess. Levon Aronian won the match. 

- There was a Women, Seniors and Juniors Chess960 (Random Rapid Chess) match between the 15th and 16th of August 2006.
Women Match: Kosteniuk - Pähtz 5,5-2,5
Seniors Match: Hort - Portisch 4-4, Hort wins tiebreak 1,5-0,5
Juniors Match: Harikrishna - Naiditsch 4,5-3,5

Participants (Total 249 players): Morozevich Alexander, Mamedyarov Shakhriyar, Grischuk Alexander, Bacrot Etienne, Bareev Evgeny, Harikrishna Pentala, Sargissian Gabriel, Volokitin Andrej, Kasimdzhanov Rustam, Naiditsch Arkadij, etc.
Winner of the FiNet Chess960 Open is Etienne Bacrot, scoring 9.5/11, half a point ahead from Mamedyarov and Grischuk.

- The Ordix traditional Rapid Chess Open took place between the 19th and 20th of August 2006. Total number of participants: 632
Top-rated players: Morozevich Alexander, Mamedyarov Shakhriyar, Grischuk Alexander, Bacrot Etienne, Bareev Evgeny, Shirov Alexey, Harikrishna Pentala, Sargissian Gabriel, Volokitin Andrej, Kasimdzhanov Rustam, Naiditsch Arkadij,
Almasi Zoltan etc.
Winner of the Ordix Open is Rustam Kasimdzhanov, scoring 9.5/11, because of better tie-break criteria. Mamedyarov is second with the same score, and Morozevich third with 9.0/11.
