The Dutch prime minister Jan-Peter Balkenende honored the tournament with his presence. Visiting the eventís main sponsor, the Corus metal company, he stopped by Wijk aan Zee to visit the tournament.
He was given a tour of the venue, and spoke briefly with the FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov.
