We are honored to invite you to the European Junior Championship which will be held in Rion Patras, from July 15th (arrival) till July 28th (departure) 2001.

During the European Junior Championship 2001 we will organize the 3rd Open International Chess Tournament of Patras (9 rounds), in which the escorts of the players will also be able to participate.

Printed material for the European Junior Championship and the 3rd Open International Chess Tournament of Patras, such as, the championship and the tournament programs, the registration forms for the players, additional players, accompanying persons, coaches, journalists, as well as a detailed information on the accommodation, meals, visas, transportation, etc. is included.

Please have the registration forms filled in and sent out to the Organizing Committee until June 1st, 2001.

1. The Venue and the Dates for the Start and Finish of the Championships.
The European Junior Championship will be held from July 15th (arrival) until July 28th (departure) 2001 in the Porto Rio Hotel in Rion Patras, which is located 8 km east from Patras, Hellas (Greece).

2. Participation
Entitled to participate are chess players from the federations of the European Zones 1.1 to 1.9 who have to be below the age of 20, by January the 1st 2001. The players placed 1-3 in the previous championship will have a personal right to participate in the tournament if they fulfill the condition described above.

In addition to the players mentioned above, each affiliated European federation will have the right to send one representative. If a federation wishes to have additional players participating, it should apply to the Organizing Committee. A player can participate in the competition only after getting an official consent.

An identity photo 2x3 cm should be send for the badge of players, coaches and Accompanying persons. Otherwise the photo can be taken on arrival ($ 5). According to FIDE regulations a CHF 100 entry fee is required for each player (CHF 200 for any additional player). This amount must be sent to FIDE.

3. Registration forms
Please return the Registration form before 1.06.2001 by fax or E-Mail.

4. Rules and Regulations
The Championship will be held in accordance with the FIDE and ECU regulations. The event will be played according to the Swiss system, 11 rounds. The time control will be 2 hours for the first 40 moves, then one hour for 20 moves and finally 30 minutes for the rest of the game. The games shall be played using DGT clocks. There will be no adjourned games.

On the free day, various events will be organized for all participants and accompanying persons.

6. Accommodation and meals
The participants and the accompanying persons (coaches, parents, journalists, etc.) will be accommodated in the Porto Rio hotel.

Note: For the additional participants and accompanying persons, there will also be alternative accommodation solutions. Information available via E-Mail.
All payments must be made on arrival, in US dollars, in cash.

7. Transportation
National federations will cover the traveling expenses of the participants and accompanying persons.
Bus transportation is provided for $45 per person from the Athens airport to residences and back to Athens airport.

8. Visas
In case of necessity of obtaining the Greek entry visa, please apply to the Greek embassies or consulates in your countries.

9. Information
During the European Junior Championship 2001 we will organize the 3rd Open International Chess Tournament of Patras (9 rounds), in which the escorts of the players will also be able to participate. There will be a live broadcast of the first two tables of the Championship in our site, via digital chessboards. All the games, the results, the standings and photographs of all the participants and special events, will be available there too. There will also be a special edition bulletin in English. Copies of the bulletin will be sent free of charge to the European Federations and to all the participants of the Championship. Copies will also be sent to the European Chess Union. During the free day, various events will be organized such as an excursion to Ancient OLYMPIA (the birthplace of the Olympic games) for all the players and accompanying persons free of charge. A music evening will follow.

10. Chief Arbiter
Mr. Panagiotis Nikolopoulos (International FIDE Arbiter) will be the Chief Arbiter of the games.
