The Essent Chess tournament took place from October 12 up to 20 October 2001 in Hoogeveen of Netherlands. Just like last year there were several competitions: a round robin, a strong Open (international) tournament, an amateur competition and an event for youth.

The double round robin tournament was based on interesting contrasts: man-woman, young-old, Dutch-foreigner. This year the following players have been invited: Viktor Kortchnoi, Judit Polgar, Loek van Wely and Lazaro Bruzon
