Ikaros Chess Festival
The
1999 Ikaros Chess Festival will take place for the 21st
consecutive time in Agios Kyrikos, Ikaria island.[1]
This year it will last two weeks in total (10 – 23rd July) and includes
seven (7) tournaments. The initial three offer accommodation privileges and the
remaining four cash prizes of total value one million drachmas (1.000.000).
In
more detail, the tournaments that will take place are the following:
1.
International Women’s Tournament.
Its duration is from the 10th until the 13th of
July and will be based on the Swiss system of five rounds and two hours maximum
thinking time for each game.
Participation is open to women chess-players regardless of caliber or
age.
As far as accommodation is concerned, 33% of the top players (classification
depending on their score) will be accommodated for the duration of the
festival.
2. Junior’s
Tournament of Agios Kyrikos.
Same as above except, young
men and women up to the age of 20 years old only can participate.
3. “Rapid” Team Tournament.
Its duration again is from the 10th to the 13th of
July with maximum thinking time twenty-five minutes (25) for each player.
Any four-player teams can participate (with freedom in the selection of
chessboards).
Again accommodation will be offered to the 20% of the top teams.
4. “Rapid” Individual’s Cup.
Duration as above but the system that will be
practiced now is a knock-out (disqualification after the loss of three points).
Thinking time for each player is limited to 25 minutes. The selection of
opponents will be based on the Swiss system but it is permitted for two players
to meet for more than one time.
Participation is unrestricted. However, players with a high rating may
join the contest from the sixth round and onwards.
The first prize is 50,000drs the second 30,000drs and the third 20,000.
5. “Blitz” International Tournament
This tournament will take place on the 13th
of July and will be based on the Swiss system of seven (7) rounds and thinking time
limited to five (5) minutes for each player for the duration of the game.
Participation is again unrestricted and the prizes are
25,000 for the first, 15,000 for the second and 10,000 for the third.
6. Aegean Open Championship.
This one will be held on the 14th
until the 22nd of July and will be based on the accelerated Swiss
system of nine (9) rounds. The allowed
thinking time will be two (2) hours for forty (40) moves for each player
and one (1) hour for the completion of
the game.
The first round will commence at 15: 00 the second until the seventh at
17: 00 the eighth at 15: 00 and the ninth at 10: 00.
The prizes will be 450.000drs in total. The first one will receive
120.000 the second 80.000, the third 60.000, the fourth 40.000, the fifth
30.000,the sixth 20.000 and the seventh 10.000. The first female player will
receive 30.000drs the second 20.000 and the third 10.000. The first veteran
will receive 20.000drs and the second 10.000drs. The female and veteran players
that will assume one of the top seven positions receive both prizes one from
the general classification and one from the specific. Cup prizes and medals
will be awarded to all of the winners in the tournament.
The
first four from the general score board in the Aegean Championship (Ikaria) and
the Mitilini International Chess Tournament, that will follow,( July 24th – August 1st ) will also receive
a cash prize of 300,000drs. 130,000 for the first, 80,000 for the second,
60,000 for the third and 40,000 for the forth.
The first Greek chess player
– member of a chess society in the Aegean region- will be declared the Aegean
Champion.
7. International Tournament “Blindfold – Rapid”
This particular tournament will take place on the 22nd and 23rd
of July and is carried out without the use of chessboards. Thinking time is
limited to twenty-five minutes per player for the duration of the game.
Participation will be defined
by invitation and the lay-out of the prizes will be 50,000 for first place,
30,000 for second and 20,000 for third.
During the period between 10 and 23 of July
classes and tournaments for young chess players are offered as well as outdoor
exhibitions of “simoultane” and “handicap”. Furthermore many other athletic and
cultural events will also take place.
(All expenditure covers all
of the tournaments and the parallel events of “Ikaria 99”)
ENTRY FEES: The entry fees
are 10,000 for the Aegean Championship and 2,000 for each of the subsequent
tournaments (these fees do not apply to holders of international titles,
chess-players that have already qualified, members of the Ikaria Chess Club
and Ikarian chess-players regardless of
which club they belong to).
CONTESTANTS EXPENDITURES: For
a limited number of contestants-the ones that have entered their participation
for the event by the 30th of June the latest- a special discount
price applies which includes ferry tickets, accommodation costs and entry fees.
This special price is set at 25,000 drs per person and applies from the 10th
until the 13th of July. From the 14th and until the 22nd
the price will be 60,000 and the costs for the entire event (10 – 22 July) is
set at 80,000 drs.
For families, four-member (at
least) teams, players under the age of 20 and natives the costs of
participation will be subsidized by the organizers up to 20% of the whole
price. So the respective price-list will be 20,000, 48,000 and 64,000.
For the chess-players that
have qualified, the IMs and GMs travel (tourist class on commercial ferries)
and accommodation (two-bed en-suite room) costs will be covered by the
committee. For GMs with an ELO up to 2300 the organizers will contribute to board and basic day to day
costs.
1) GMs and WGMs will receive 3,000 drs for every ten points above 2300 ELO.
2) The world championship
candidates (all who reached the match between the eight best men or women) will
receive 5,000 for each ten points above 2300 ELO
SCORE TIES
The criteria for a
ruling when faced with a situation of a score tie in any of the tournaments
(unless there is a different clause stated in a complementary edition of the
set rules) will be: 1) Buholtz 2)
Median Buholtz 3) Victories 4) Sum of progressive standings. The
tie-break conditions apply in all events and tournaments. However, the
cash-prizes are divided equally between the players that hold the same final
score.
