The 1997 Agios Nikolaos open
International Chess Tournament
October 15-23, 1997

 

61 players from 16 countries participated in the 1997 Agios Nikolaos open

chess tournament. Among them were 10 Grandmasters (Miles, Atalik, Nenashev, Wojtkiewicz, Timoshenko, Moskalenko, Conquest, I. Nikolaidis, Pavlovic, Lomineisvili) and 9 International Masters.

English GM Tony Miles won the tournament on tie-break with 6,5 points.

The Agios Nikolaos open is part of the 1997 International Grand-Prix of Crete and

had a total prize fund of 15.000 DM. The Municipality Youth Centre of Agios Nikolaos and the 1994-99 R.O.P. of Crete were the main sponsors of this event.
