15 July 2002: Dortmund to host Brain Games Network Candidates tournament
From 6-21 July 2002, Dortmund will host the BGN Candidates
tournament for the World Championship under the aegis of the Dortmunder
Sparkassen Chess Meetings. The winner of this competition will face BGN
world champion Vladimir Kramnik in the title match later that year.
Six top players will be invited to Dortmund including world number one and ex-world champion Garry Kasparov and FIDE champion Viswanathan Anand. Two places will be kept for qualifiers from the BGN Internet competition which starts in August 2001 and for which anyone in the world is eligible. From this date, several internet qualifying events will be held on the BGN site and the exact field for Dortmund will be known by March 2002. At a press conference in Dortmund, world champion Vladimir Kramnik said: ‘There is no reason for Kasparov to avoid this Candidates tournament. The conditions are outstanding and I hope he will be there.’
