Ikaros Chess Festival 2009 From: Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos - AIA) To: The port of Piraeus
By Bus:
Take the ×96 Express Line “Piraeus - Athens Airport Express”. The trip takes 75-90 minutes. The line ends at the port (Karaiskaki Square). The deck for the ferries to Samos and Ikaria (Gate E9) is 5-10 minutes walking from the bus stop (number 4 (blue) on the map). The trip costs 3.20 € per person. You can buy your tickets from the bus driver or the kiosk at the bust stop at the airport.

By Metro:
Due to construction works on Metro line 3, the part of the line from Ethniki Amina station till the Athens International Airport station is inactive. So if you want to use the metro you should take the bus X94 Express Line “Ethniki Amina Station – Athens Airport Express” (The trip costs 3.20 € per person) and then from Ethniki Amina take the Metro line 3 (blue line): "Ethniki Amina– Egaleo" with direction to Egaleo. At Monastiraki station you change to Metro line 1 (green line) direction Piraeus. The line ends at the port (near Karaiskaki Square). The trip takes around 60 minutes. The deck for the ferries to Samos and Ikaria (Gate E9) is 10-15 minutes walking from the metro station (number 3 (blue) on the map). The metro ticket costs 1.00 € per person but ask whether the bus ticket from the airport is also valid for the metro till Piraeus. You can buy your tickets from the metro station at Ethniki Amina.
Summary: Airport -> ×94 Express Line -> Ethniki Amina -> Metro line 3 (blue line) -> Monastiraki -> Metro line 1 (green line) -> Piraeus (Metro Station port)
By Suburban Railway (Proastiakos):
Take the Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) line to Nerantziotissa station. There you change to the Metro Line 1 (green line) direction Piraeus (validate your ticket again before entering the metro line). The line ends at the port (near Karaiskaki Square) The trip takes around 60 minutes. An alternative route is (instead of Nerantziotissa) continue and change line at Ano Liosia station. From Ano Liosia you change to the other line of Proastiakos with direction Piraeus (which is the last station of the line). This way it takes around 60-70 minutes to get to Piraeus. The deck for the ferries to Samos and Ikaria (Gate E9) is 10-15 minutes walking from the metro and Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) station (blue point 3 on the map). The trip costs 6.00 € per person but there is a discount if 2 (two) or more persons travel together (5 € per person, you buy a single ticket for 10 Euros). You can buy your tickets from the Suburban Railway station at the airport.

By Taxi:
Taxi is the most expensive option but might be convenient for those who are on a hurry or are not very fond of public transport. You can get a taxi just at the exit of the airport arrival terminal. The overall cost (including some extra charges) for the ride from the airport to the Piraeus port should be around 35 to 45 Euros depending on the traffic. Upon the beginning of the ride make sure that the driver starts the tariff meter. In the final tariff price you should add a price for picking you from the airport (3.20 Euros) plus a price for the luggage (0.32 Euros per bag). Note: these prices might have been somewhat increased lately.
General Tip: At the port of Piraeus look for Gate E9 (to West Cyclades, Samos, Ikaria). Gate E9 is 5-10 minutes walking from the X96 bus stop (Karaiskaki Square, blue point 4 on the map) and 10-15 minutes from the metro station and Proastiakos (see blue point 3 on the map below). From the metro station (called Electric Railway on the map) at Piraeus, in order to get to Gate E9 one can also use the bus lines 843 and 859 (exit the metro station in the direction of the port –facing the sea- and cross the road. The bus stop is almost opposite the station exit outside the fence of the port. The bus stop is name “Stathmos ISAP” –“ÓÔÁÈÌÏÓ ÇÓÁД in Greek-, you get off at the second stop named “Aghios Spyridonas” –“ÁÃÉÏÓ ÓÐÕÑÉÄÙÍÁÓ” in Greek. (estimated travel time 3-4 minutes)
Ticket Tip: Keep in mind that the tickets for metro and suburban railway from the airport are valid for 90 minutes after their first validation and can be used for all transport types while the ticket for the bus is valid for 24 hours after the first validation for all transport types. However all kinds of tickets are valid for just one transport to or from the airport. There are also discounts for groups of people traveling together, e.g., two persons can buy a single ticket at the price of 10 Euros (instead of 12 Euros)
Scheduled Departures: On Friday 10th of July, there is a scheduled departure of participants at 23:59 with F/B Marina of G.A. Ferries S.A. (their colors are red-blue). F/B Marina departs from Gate E9 (see the map below and guidelines above). Members of the organization committee will be at (or close to) the ferry entrance to hand the ferry tickets to the participants. Attention!!! Ferry tickets will be available only for those participants who will have notified the organization committee in advance in order to make the necessary reservations.
